G Street

As we stated in the section on the well-shaft, the grotto in the middle of the shaft was located at ground level, where the masonry met the limestone bedrock.
![]() In the same section, we suggested that the canal in the DC map was intended to map to the shaft, and that the open area next to the canal was synonymous with the grotto in the shaft. Looking at the image below, we see that G Street runs along the bottom edge of the landing on the edge of the Anacostia River and through the center of the open area adjacent to the canal.
![]() We also see that as the line created by G Street continues to the west, that it helps define the position of the Jefferson Memorial, along with the lines generated by 16th Street running through the White House and Maryland Avenue coming from the Capitol. Note that in the image map of the Tree of Life in the DC map, the Jeff. M'ml represents the tenth sphere on the tree which is associated with the earth; another sort of ground level. If we follow that line further to the west, we see that it eventually passes through the Custis-Lee Mansion, which is now called Arlington House.
