The Tree of Life

Ten Spheres

Now compare the above hexagram image with the image of the Tree below, where we see three spheres added. This is the "Gates of Light" form of the tree that was presented at the beginning. As you can see, the center part of the tree figure is identical to the hexagram presentation of the planets, with one small exception.

Note that adding two elements to the hex image would produce just nine spheres, and not the ten that we see in the Tree. In order to get ten spheres (like the fingers and toes) we need to add three spheres to the hexagon figure, those being the earth, the Zodiac and the "primum mobile", the first moved, or throne of God. The red line shows the descent on the tree image.

In images of the Tree of Life, Saturn's old position is named Daath, but is not depicted on the Tree; this corresponds to the location of the "Y" above. Note that, instead of being placed one on top of the other, Saturn and the Zodaic are displayed side by side. This reflects earlier difficulties encountered by artists trying to figure whether to use nine, ten or eleven spheres, and whether the Throne of God should be depicted, etc. The point being that different cosmological canons produce different versions of the arrangement of the planets, according to differing logics.

Nine Worlds

For instance, the image below, entitled "The Nine Worlds of the Odinic Mysteries", and taken from Manley P. Hall's book "The Secret Teachings of All Times", depicts the Norse version of the Tree, Yggdrasil, with only nine spheres. Note that the cosmology on which this is based, has the earth as the center, instead of the sun; hence the 4 directions marked around that. The sun replaces the zodiac at the top of this image, as the soul's true home.

At first glance, this figure composed on nine spheres, would appear to make a more attractive adaptation than the one with ten spheres above. Clearly, whoever designed the tree of ten spheres had some controlling logic that caused them to not use the use the simpler nine spehre figure.

You will note that, according to Hall, "The Nordic Mysteries were given in nine chambers or caverns, the candidate advancing through them in sequential order. There is undoubtably a relationship between the nine worlds of the Scandinavians and the nine spheres, or planes, through which the initiates of the Eleusian Mysteries passed in their ritual of regeneration. These chambers of initiation represented the nine spheres into which the Drottars divided the Universe".

Metatron's Cube

Comparing Metatron's Cube below, with the Nine Worlds image, we see that the only difference between the two is that the direction indicators (N, S, E, W) have been replaced with spheres. As you can see, the cube consists of thirteen spheres instead of nine.

Of course, the cube is easier to see if we add the other spheres.

Note the nested hexagram/cube figures. Metatron's Cube is just an extension, or projection if you will, of the hexagon figure of the planets at the top of the page. That image was one surrounded by six, the initial Cube was one surrounded by twelve, like Jesus, Moses and Hercules, while the last cube image is one surrounded by 18; each time we add six more spheres.

Overlapping the spheres gives us this. The nineteen sphere image is depicting the notion of 3 cubed, and since 3x3x3=27, we know that 8, or 2 cubed spheres are "hidden". Looking at the original hexagram/planets image, you will see that it too figures a cube, with seven spheres showing and one hidden. Theosophists refer to this hidden sphere as the Black Sun or the Sun Behind the Sun. Note that Sirius, the brightest star in the sky is behind the sun as seen from the earth on July 4th.

The image on the right results from making the spheres transparent, and is commonly known as the Flower of Life, composed of multiple vesicas.

Metatron = Enoch

According to tradition, Metatron is seen as the entity who transmitted Kaballistic knowledge to man (in the same manner as Mercury, Apollo and Isis are said to have given man Mathematics, writing, etc). In Kabbalistic legends, Enoch is said to have become the Archangel Metatron after ascending to the Throne of God.

"And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him." KJV Genesis 5:21-24 [Note the number 365 in the narrative marks Enoch as a solar figure, that being the number of days in a year.] By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, "and was not found, because God had taken him"; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. Hebrews 11:5

The Royal Arch

Another legend involving Enoch is featured in the Royal Arch Degree of Freemasonry. This legend is related to the story that was told earlier about Enoch building the two pillars inscribed with the knowledge accumulated by mankind, after having been warned of the upcoming flood. Enoch stories are always about the transmission and preservation of knowledge.

[So far we have mentioned two main Kabbalistic themes, 1) the transmission and preservation of knowledge, and 2) exile and return; the Royal Arch legend concerns itself with loss and recovery. In the transmission of knowledge, there is the transmitter, and there is the receiver; Kabbalah means "received". Exile and return is the hero's voyage, a personal experience, while loss and recovery pertains to an object of some sort.] In the Scottish Rites, the thirteenth degree is called the Royal Arch of Solomon. As the story goes, Enoch, after having been told of the impending Flood , excavated nine chambers or apartments in the earth, each featuring an arch. (Remember that arch, could easily mean arc, ark and circle.) In the ninth or lowest chamber Enoch hid a white cube with an inset golden triangle on which was inscribed the True Name of God. There are different versions of the story, but the essence is that workmen preparing the site for the Temple (either Solomon's or the second one), discovered the opening, climbed down to the ninth level and recovered the cube.

This legend is built around the notion of the power of names so important to ceremonial magic, where the possesion of the true pronunciation was deemed to confer on a perosn who had it extraordinary and supernatural powers. The Hebrews were fearful of pronouncing the name of their Deity, lest someone hear them and make use of the name to their disadvantage. Once a year, the High Priest was said to pronounce the Name within the Holy of Holies of the Temple (which was cube shaped), amid a clamour being created outside by the people, lest any one over hear. After the destruction of the Temple, and during years of exile, the correct pronunciation of the Name was either lost or corrupted, so that the restoration of the Jewish Empire depended n the Rebuilding of the Temple and the Recovery of the True Name, which was accomplished in the legend of the Arch.

Not Lost, Just Hidden

One of the lessons of the Royal Arch is that the Name was not really lost so much as it was buried or hidden, yet discoverable. All one needs to do is to look in the right place.

Albert Pike calls this legend featuring Enoch and the cube to be "an allegory, representing the perpetuation of knowledge of the True God in the sanctuaries. By the subterranean vaults you may understand the places of initiation which in the ancient ceremonies were generally underground. All the temples of the ancient world practiced the mysteries. The system of numbers was intimately connected with their religions and worship". This, of course, parallels what Hall says above about the Norse and Greeks, and nine chambers.

The Cube and Triangle

Symbolically, a square represents matter, while a cube represents 3D time-space, materiality. The traingle is the Universal Symbol for Divinity. Therefore, the cube with the inlaid triangle containing the name of God, represents the Divine Spark immanent in mattter. This is pure Egypto-Gnostic-Alchemy here.

Pike tells us that, "The name of the Deity engraved on a triangular plate, and sunken into a cube of agate (compare to the Alchemists White Stone) teaches us that the true knowledge of God, of his nature and attributes, is written upon the leaves of the great book of Universal Nature. This knowledge of God, so written is the Master Mason's Word."

I believe that the notion of excavating in underground chambers is symbolic of studying occult subjects, and that is what is intended in the Templar legends where it is said that they took up residence below the temple, and recovered a treasure after excavating there. The Templar's Treasure is the Master Mason's Word spoken of by Pike.

You may note that the crypt or vault, as the center of the Royal Arch symbolism, links that legend to the Rosicrucian "Fama," which tells the story of the finding of the vault of Christian Rosenkreutz. The discovery in Royal Arch Masonry, by way of the ring in the slab of stone, is in exact correspondence with the "Fama" story. Part of the work of the Alchemist is to distill the Divine Spark, the Gold, out of base matter and him or herself, and the place to look is in your heart.

Enoch's Cube

Here we have articulated the cube by adding the Pythagorean "Y". Note that there are two ways to incorporate a triangle onto this hexagon/cube.

To review: we have seen that Enoch and Metatron are the same entity, that Metatron's Cube is figured with 13 spheres, that the Royal Arch is the 13th Degree of the Scottish Rites, that Enoch excavates nine chambers, reminding us of the nine world's image, which is M's Cube - 4 spheres, that Encoch's Cube has a triangle inset in it, as does M's Cube; therefore I feel confident in saying that Metatron's Cube is also Encoh's Cube from the Royal Arch legend, as well as others.
