Astronomy in the Bible

Astronomy is one of the first layers of meaning that fall out when we examine the symbols and numbers in the Bible. The three most important numbers related to astronomy in the Bible are 12, 4 and 7, as in twelve zodiac signs, four cardinal directions and 'fixed' zodiac signs, and seven planetary spheres.Remember that the ancient Greek legend said that the soul came from and returned to the realm of the stars (the heavens or Milky Way) via seven planetary spheres; Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury and the Moon, as they were listed back then. Adding the stars at the top and the earth at the bottom yields a total of nine spheres.
![]() In the image of the astronomer above we we that he is holding a model of the earth, the moon is in the sky, the dome of stars including the zodiac is above his head, and the 'planets' (including the sun) are down the back of the chair.
12 + 1In mythology, there are 12 Olympian gods and goddesses, ruled by Jupiter. The planet Jupiter has a 12 year period, meaning that it takes 12 years for it to orbit the sun once. The 12 sections of the sky that we know as 'zodiac signs' mark the distance that Jupiter travels in the sky each solar year (one earth orbit of the sun). Before the Olympians there were the Titans, who were the twelve children of Gaia and Uranus (the earth and the sky). Jupiter's father was Saturn, the namesake of Saturday the Hebrew day of woship. Saturn has a 28 year period; and the Gregorian calendar repeats itself every 28 years. Because of the long period of the planet, Saturn was also called Chronos, or time. Twelve plus one is of course the sun and the twelve Zodiac Signs. We see examples of this encoded as Hercules' 12 labors, Jacob's 12 children, the 12 tribes, the 12 disciples, the 12 gates on the new Jerualem Rev 21. The 12 gates relate to the placement of the tribes in the desert camp, and the standards carried by the tribes give a hint as to which tribes are which signs. The 12 jewels in the priest's beastplate figures in here too. Then name SOL-omon kind of gives the story away ahead of time for this figure.
1 Kings 4: Enoch too is connected to the solar year in that he is said to have lived 365 years. 365 days equals one year.
John and JesusJohn's nativity is celebrated on June 24th at the Summer Solstice (in the northern hemisphere), when the sun is highest in the sky at noon. Jesus' birth is celebrated on December 25th at the Winter Solstice, when the sun is low in the sky. John says "He must increase, but I must decrease" John.3:30. Luke 1 tells the story of the conception of both John and Jesus. Gabriel comes to Elisabeth first when her husband Zacharia was buisy at the Temple. Since John is born in June, we know that the angel visited Elisabeth in September at the Equinox, so Zacharia was at Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. The angel comes to Mary six months later at the Passover.
FourThe number four relates to the four elements, the four cardinal directions, the four winds, the four rivers in Eden, the four seasons etc. The four cardinal points translate to the four so-called Fixed Zodiac Signs, those being Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. We see these four represented in Ezekiel I and in Revelations, and they are related to the Four Apostles. We see both of these represented on the KJV Title Page. In Ezekiel 1:10 we see "[10] As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle". These are of course Aquarius, Leo, Taurus and Scorpio. In Revelations 4:7 we see, "And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle".
A Great Wonder in HeavenIn Rev 12 we are told of "a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered" as well as "a great red dragon, having seven heads". The woman is the Cosmic Virgin, the twelves stars are the zodiac signs and the seven heads are the classical planets.
![]() The dragon, whose "tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven" stood before the woman. If you think back to high school Biology, you may remember a small aquatic creature with multiple heads, that if you cut it in two, the top half would re-generate a new bottom, while the bottom half would re-generate a new top; this is the Hydra. If we look at a sky map, we see that the Hydra stands before the Virgo constellation.
![]() The Hydra and the Virgo are the two largest constellations in the sky. As a matter of fact, the Hydra is the longest constellation in terms of spherical degrees covered, but also in total area in the sky. The Hydra is 90 degrees long, one quarter of the sky. Given that we only see 180 degrees of the sky at a time, we can easily say that it's "tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven". Note that constellations are man made groupings of stars used to tell stories. For the zodiac belt that encompasses the path traveled by the sun, moon and other planets, it was convenient to devise groups that were the same width as the arc traveled by Jupiter (the largest of the planets) each year. For the others, varying natural shapes were chosen as models, like Orion the Hunter who faces Taurus the Bull (materiality). Something special had to be going on for an ancient people to devise a constellation half the width of the sky, like the Hydra.
The 'Planets'As was pointed out above, the ancients taught that the soul came from and returned to the stars via seven planetary spheres. In the next image we see Saturn at the top and the Moon at the bottom. Saturn rules Capricorn and the Moon rules Cancer. As the Moon was seen as the last stop before incarnating in the earth plane, Cancer was called the Gate of Birth, and since Saturn was the last stop on the 'way out', Capricorn was called the Gate of Death.
![]() In Revelations 1 we read :
12 Being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; The menorah, seven candlesticks, is used for the Festival of Lights, and represents the seven 'planets' (the lights). [Note that in terms of the Revelation, while seven stars are the seven planets, the seven churches (as well as the seven seals on the book) allude to the seven Kundalini Chakras. The four and twenty elders before the throne are the 24 cranial nerves that meet to make up the spinal column.]
Revelation 6As far as rulership goes, the signs are represented backwards during the 'fall'. Saturn rules Capricorn, Jupiter - Sagittarius, Mars - Scorpio, Venus - Libra, Mercury - Virgo, the Sun - Leo, and the Moon - Cancer. If we leave off the extremes, Saturn and the Moon, we are left with the sun surrounded by four planets. You will remember that Helios, the sun god was pulled across the sky by a chariot pulled by four horses. The roman circuses were places where they raced chariots around an elliptical path imitating the paths of the planets. We also see four horses in Revelations chapter 6, one for each of the first four seals. Opening the first one reveals "a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him". Symbolically a horse/man with a bow and a crown would be Jupiter, king of the planets, who rules Sagittarius (half man half horse) the archer. Next we see "another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword". A red horse with a sword could only be Scorpio, and while it does not say scorpions here it does say that power was given to him, and in 9:3 we read "And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power". As you can see, we are working backwards through the signs so that the next one would be Libra, whose sign is the scale because the equinox occurs there. "And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand." The next sign is Virgo ruled by Mercury, the spirit who guides the souls in their journey, and we see "a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him." Remember that the cadesus used by the medical profession is the sign carried by Mercury. So the four horses are the four closest planets to the sun. Rev 12-13 adds the sun, the moon, the earth and the stars to the list.
12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the
moon became as blood; Stars falling to earth is a metaphor for souls entering a body, incarnation. Note that only Saturn is missing from Rev ch. 6.
The TOLThe celestial spheres that relate to the soul's supposed journey have been depicted variously by various artists. Above we saw the seven 'planets' mapped to the hexagram, with the sun at the center. As you can see the outer planets are above the sun while the inner ones are below it. Adding the stars at the top and the earth at the bottom yields nine spheres, and if you add the Throne of God at the very top, you get ten cosmic spheres. In the view below the earth is depicted at the center of a set of 10 concentric spheres, indicative of the geocentric outlook.
![]() The Norse version of the tree of life, Ygdrassil, consists of nine spheres and is derived from the hexagram image. But here the earth is at the center and the sun, seen as the soul's goal, is placed at the top. Note the direction markers surrounding the earth.

The Kabbalistic Tree of Life is a graphic representaion of these ten spheres, as is Dante's Inferno. Each point on the tree relates to a number from 1-10 and a celestial sphere. The 10 sphere tree was designed as a set of correspondences that ties together the ten Arabic numbers with the signs for the planets and the 'magic squares' associated with the planets. If you look at the signs for the planets you will see that they look like the number associated with that planet on the tree; the easiest one to see if Jupiter. As to the magic squares, their shape is determined by the number associated with the planet. Saturn is at sphere 3 and is made up of a 3 x 3 grid. Mars, at 5 is a 5 x 5 grid. A magic square is designed so that all rows and columns add to the same number. The sun is at sphere 6 on the tree. The magic square of the sun is a 6 x 6 grid of the first 36 numbers, designed so that all rows and columns add to 111. All 36 add to 666. 666 is the total of the magic square of the sun. The number 'six hundred threescore and six' appears twice in the KJV, once in Rev 13 and once in 1 Kings 10:14 Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold.
